Can 4th Quarter® operate over a mixed platform network (PC's
Yes, 4th Quarter is fully cross-platform compatible.
You can run the 4D Server application on either Mac or PC server and support
a network of mixed Mac and PC clients. Separate Mac and PC versions of the 4th
Quarter software must be installed according to the type of machine you are
running. Both types are provided as part of your purchase.
Your LAN should run ethernet over coax or twisted pair. 4th Dimension support
a variety of network protocals, provided with the 4D Server software, that include
ADSP or ARA (Apple), TCP/IP, and IPX. 4D Server handles its own network communication.
You do not need any additional network management software.
4D Server runs as an optimized client/server system. It can transfer data over
relatively busy systems or systems with relatively low bandwidth. While a high
band width network will improve network performance you will get the greatest
gains in network performance by using a fast server machine, with plenty of
memory, and a fast hard disk.
Since 4D Server uses a client/server architecture the task of accessing and
supplying data is done on the server machine.
Use the fastest server you can afford. Install plenty of memory using the rule
of 4 megabytes per client. Equip the server with a fast hard disk.
PC servers should be running a Pentium PC chip under Windows NT. Do not run
the server under Windows 95 of Windows 98. Mac servers should be running Power
PC chips under Mac OS 8 or higher.
Your server must run only the 4D Server application. It must not run any other
applications, such as mail or file servers.
Your server should be in a secure location. No person should work on the server
except to administer the 4D Server application.
PC clients should run at least 486-class chips under Windows NT, 95, or 98.
Mac clients should run Power PC chips under Mac OS 8.6 or later. Clients should
each have 32 megabytes or more of memory. Monitors at least 17 inches in size
are recommended for desktop systems. Client software can run on laptops.
Yes, to run in single-user mode simply
launch the demo version and enter a valid license number. To run 4th Quarter
on a network in multi-user mode requires the 4D Server application.
While 4th Quarter does not require a network, it is designed as network software
and performs many special features specific to a multi-user
environment. You forfeit significant opportunity when you
choose to run it as a stand-alone system.
Can 4th Quarter by used to provide Internet
The 4D Server provides Internet access as part of its basic services. Internet
clients are managed with a licensing scheme based on the number of simultaneous
connections. This is separate from the licensing of simultaneous local area
4D Server is supplied with a 2 Internet user connection license. To support
additional Internet connections contact Braided Matrix or 4D, Inc.
